Dr. Chu received his Bachelor of Science degree from the University of California, Berkeley, and his Ph.D. from UCLA. He accepted a "temporary job" with the National Institutes of Health in the 1970s and has been there ever since. For the last 29 years, he has been with the National Cancer Institute; he has coauthored more than 250 scientific publications during this period. At NCI, Dr. Chu has worked in the areas of carcinogen bioassays (animal tests for carcinogens); early detection and screening; cancer epidemiologyexplaining patterns in cancer rates; and since the mid 1990s, in special populations research and the reduction of cancer health disparities. He is Chief of the Disparities Research Branch at the Center to Reduce Cancer Health Disparities.
