F. Allan Hubbell, M.D., M.S.P.H., B.A.
F. Allan Hubbell is Professor and Chair of the Department of Medicine at the University of California, Irvine. He received his B.A. from Baylor University, M.D. from Baylor College of Medicine, and M.S.P.H. from UCLA. He completed an Internal Medicine residency at the University of California, Irvine (UC-Irvine). Dr. Hubbell's research focuses primarily on the cancer control needs of medically underserved populations and health policy options to address those needs. Examples include studies funded by the National Cancer Institute on cancer-related knowledge, attitudes, and preventive practices among Latinos and Pacific Islandersspecial populations that reside in large numbers in California. These studies have documented varying levels of knowledge about the risk factors, signs, and symptoms of cancer as well as minimal use of cancer prevention services. To address these problems, his research team has developed culturally sensitive cancer prevention programs to improve knowledge about cancer and increase screening in these populations.
Dr. Hubbell's concern with medically underserved populations is also evident in his educational, clinical, and professional activities. He provides instruction to students and delivers patient care in a university hospital-affiliated indigent health care clinic. He has won acclaim for his teaching, including the Faculty of the Year Award, and for his clinical care; he has been listed as one of the best physicians in the United States. Because of his expertise, he has served on scientific advisory committees for organizations such as the National Cancer Institute, Southwest Oncology Group, National Board of Medical Examiners, Department of Health and Human Services, Health Resources and Services Administration, and American Cancer Society. Through his research, teaching, clinical activities, and professional service, Dr Hubbell is contributing to the goal of eliminating health disparities among racial/ethnic groups in this country.
